Programs
The most effective way to prepare your child for learning is to read with them.
What is ‘1,000 Books Before Kindergarten’?
This FREE, self-paced program is designed to help parents/guardians/caregivers prepare their children for kindergarten by reading 1,000 books with them before they start school. And yes, books can be repeated as many times as you read them!
Who can participate?
Any child from birth until s/he enters kindergarten can participate.
How do we participate?
Read a book, any book, with your newborn, infant, and/or toddler!
What are the benefits of this program?
Through reading aloud, your child develops background knowledge about a variety of topics; builds vocabulary; becomes familiar with rich language patterns; develops familiarity with story structure; becomes familiar with the reading process; and begins to identify reading as a pleasurable activity. Studies have also shown that reading with your child provides a great opportunity for bonding, creating life-long memories for both of you!
Plus receive a free children’s book simply by registering for the program and a certificate upon completion! Please note that you must come to the Union City Public Library to receive the book and certificate.
