1930- 9/7/1999 | Zaborowski, Anna Hagis, 69, of 10964 Route 8, Wattsburg, died Tuesday, Sept. 7, 1999, at her home after a lengthy illness. She was born Oct. 23, 1929, in West Middlesex, daughter of the late Samuel and Helen Mikota Hagis. She lived in the Erie area since 1944. She worked as a machine taper for General Electric Co., retiring in 1986 after 28 years. She was a member of Wattsburg Area Baptist Church for 34 years, and the Gideon Auxiliary of the Erie Central Camp. She was preceded in death by a sister, Lena Auxier, in 1989. Survivors include her husband, Charles Zaborowski; two sons, John Zaborowski and his wife, Carolyn, and Paul Zaborowski and his wife, Tina, all of Wattsburg; two daughters, Patricia Zaborowski of Lexington, Ky., and Jean Watson of Glendale, Ariz.; a brother, Samuel Hagis of Pulaski; four grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews. Death 12/23/2000 | Zaborowski, Irene Zdunczyk, 77, of RD 2, Macedonia Road, Wattsburg, died Saturday, Dec. 23, 2000, at her residence following a brief illness. She was born April 14, 1923, in Erie, daughter of the late Frank and Lottie Wiecykoska Zdunczyk. She had resided in the Wattsburg area for more than 55 years. She and her husband owned a dairy farm on Macedonia Road in Greenfield Township for many years. She was a member of St. Mathias Catholic Church in French Creek, N.Y., and the Hornby Historical Society in North East. She enjoyed cooking, baking and gardening. She was preceded in death by her husband, Walter J. Zaborowski, on March 5, 1990; a son, Stanley S. Zaborowski, in 1967; two brothers, Stephen Zdunczyk in 1925 and Edward Zdunczyk in 1957. Survivors include two sons, Walter R. Zaborowski and his wife, Theresa, of Erie, and Ronald R. Death 6/30/2002 | Zaborowski, Kenneth R., 58, of 14310 Lowville St., Wattsburg, died Sunday, June 30, 2002, at his residence after a lengthy illness. He was born Oct. 19, 1943, in Erie, son of Mary Tech Zaborowski of West Palm Beach, Fla., and the late Stanley Zaborowski. He lived in Wattsburg all of his life. He was self-employed in the logging and excavating industry for 42 years. He attended Wattsburg High School and Greenfield Baptist Church. He was a life member of the NRA and was an avid hunter. He was preceded in death by a brother, Carl Zaborowski. Death 2/2/2001 | Zajac, John, 73, of RD1, Pine Valley Road, Columbus, Pa., died Friday, Feb. 2, 2001, at Hamot Medical Center. He was born April 26, 1927, in Brownsville, Pa., son of the late Frank and Mary Baron Zajac Sr.. He moved to Union City as a young boy and attended grade school there. He later attended Corry High School. He worked at the former Raymond Manufacturing Co. for a few years before serving with the U.S. Army in the European Theater during World War II. Following his discharge from the Army, he returned to Union City and worked at the General Electric Co. plant in Erie. In 1954, he moved to Columbus and purchased a dairy farm, which he operated until a semi-retirement in 1991. During that period, he also worked at a milk plant in Bear Lake for a few years. He then helped his son, John E. Zajac, operate the farm. He was a member of St. Elizabeth Roman Catholic Church and the VFW Post 264 in Corry. As a young man, he pitched for a baseball team in Elgin, Pa. He enjoyed bowling, hunting, fishing, and especially family gatherings and playing cards. He was preceded in death by a brother, Joseph Zajac. Survivors include his wife, Mary Jane Sadowski Zajac, whom he married Sept. 15, 1951, in Corry; two daughters, Diane M. Rodriguez and her husband, Milagro, of Conyers, Ga., and Julie T. Zajac of Atlanta, Ga.; two sons, John E. Zajac of Columbus and Steven M. Zajac Pennsburg; six sisters, Mary Farak and her husband, Thomas, of Erie, Bertha King, Helen Kurt and her husband, Andy, and Frances Tidd and her husband, Richard, all of Meadville, Sophie Kurnava and her husband, James, of Cleveland, Ohio, and Julia Zienka and her husband, Joseph, of Mentor, Ohio; four brothers, Frank Zajac and his wife, Anne, of Union City, Stanley Zajac and his wife, Louise, of Bear Lake, Edward Zajac and his wife, Olga, of Wattsburg and George Zajac and his wife, Pauline, of North East; four grandchildren, Steven R. Death 6/29/1994 | Zalik, Joseph, 71, 11097 Route 8, Union City, died Wednesday, June 29, 1994, at Union City Memorial Hospital. He was born in Bethlehem, Feb. 5, 1923, son of the late Stephen and Anna Zemecz Zalik. Mr. Zalik attended school in the Lottsville area and was graduated from Lottsville High School in 1941. He was a U.S. Navy veteran, serving from 1944-46. He worked for many years in the dairy industry, retiring nine years ago as a state inspector from the Pennsylvania Department of Agriculture. He was a member of the Saint Elizabeth Roman Catholic Church, Corry, and the Northwest Fieldmen’s Association, for which he served as secretary for many years. He is survived by his wife, Anne Sadowski Zalik; two sons, Frank S. Zalik, Cambridge Springs and Joseph Zalik, Mill Village; a brother, John Zalik, Bear Lake; four grandchildren and several nieces and nephews. Burial was at Saint Elizabeth Cemetery, Corry. |
Death 8/10/1998 | Zarecky. Sister Rosann Zarecky, RSM, a member of the Sisters of Mercy order of Roman Catholic nuns for the past 36 years, died Monday, Aug. 10, 1998. She was born in Greenville, daughter of Rudolph Zarecky and the late Ann Nadasky Zarecky. She entered the Sisters of Mercy at St. Joseph Novitiate in Titusville on Sept. 8, 1962. She professed perpetual vows Aug. 2, 1971. Sr. Rosann was a pastoral minister at St. Teresa of Avila Roman Catholic Church from 1987-90. In addition to her father and members of the Sisters of Mercy, survivors include a sister, Mrs. Mary Ann Walker; two brothers, Paul and Philip Zarecky; and two nieces, a nephew and a great-nephew. |

He was born Sept. 29, 1929, in Oil City, a son of the late John and Frances Ziemba. He graduated from Oil City High School in 1947, where he excelled in baseball, football and basketball. He entered the U.S. Navy July 17, 1947. He served on the U.S.S. Kearsarge and the U.S.S. Leyte, where he became an accomplished welder and won many swimming and diving awards. He was honorably discharged April 21, 1950, at Quonset Point, Rhode Island, with the rank of metalsmith third class. He worked for 19 years at Struthers-Wells Corporation and Universal Cyclops Specialty Steel Corporation until his retirement Feb. 28, 1992. He taught gym class at St. Joseph Academy during the 1960’s. He was a member of St. Titus Church. He was a former member of the Eagles Club and Polish National Alliance of Titusville and the Pulaski Club of Oil City. He was a collector of antique bottles. He was preceded in death by a brother, Joseph Ziemba. Survivors include his wife, Jane Griffin Ziemba, whom he married May 11, 1957, in Titusville; a son Joseph Ziemba and his wife, Barb, of Titusville; two daughters, Kathy Beach and her husband, Gary of Titusville and Terri See and her husband, Bill, of Centerville; two sisters, Lottie Stolarczyk of Meadville and Mary Joslin and her husband, Donald, of Oil City; seven grandchildren; and many nieces and nephews. He was born June 1, 1936, in Greene Township, son of the late David and Minnie Hettrick Zimmer. He was superintendent for the Erie Cemetery Association, retiring in 2001 after 39 years. He graduated from Academy High School in 1955. He was a member of the St. Boniface Ushers Club and enjoyed hunting, fishing, camping and farming. She was born Feb. 25, 1924, in Union City, daughter of the late William T. and Florence Bartholme Gray. She had been a native of Pennsylvania until 1962. She lived in Dayton for the past five years. She worked as a secretary for Baylor University Bookstore in Waco, Texas, for 11 years before she retired. She was a member of Calvary Baptist Church of Dayton. She was preceded in death by her first husband, Lawrence Sherman; a sister, Dorothy Gray; and a stepsister, Joyce Varnard. Death 12/17/2001 | Zimmer, Raymond H., 91, a resident of Manchester Presbyterian Lodge, Fairview Township, died Monday, Dec. 17, 2001, after a brief illness. He was born May 12, 1910, in Erie, son of the late Henry and Libbie Denning Zimmer. He retired from Meadowbrook Dairy in 1975. He previously worked as a route salesman for the Erie County Milk Association for 12 years, then founded and operated Zimmer Dairy for six years and Sunrise Dairy for 13 years. He also worked part time for the Russell C. Schmidt & Son Funeral Home for 12 years. He was a life member of the East Erie Turners. He was also a member of St. John’s Lutheran Church, the Siebenbuerger and Zukor clubs, the Elks Lodge and the Retired Erie Milk Dealers Association. He was preceded in death by his wife of 64 years, Lena R. “Lee” Balsiger Zimmer, in 1997; a brother, Kenneth W. Zimmer; and four sisters, Geraldine Thomas, Florence Messenger, Margaret Hermann and Beatrice Zimmer. Survivors include two sons, Raymond L. Zimmer and his wife, Marilyn, of Bethel Park and David J. Zimmer and his wife, Linda, of Erie; two daughters, Marjorie “Midge” Sheldon and her husband, Gaylord, and Joan Stewart and her husband, Richard, all of Erie; two sisters, Hazel Arnold of Waterford and Jeanette Dougherty of Erie; two brothers, Lester F. James “Jim,” 62, of 10028 Sampson Road, Waterford, died unexpectedly Saturday, Aug. 17, 1996, at Hamot Medical Center, after sustaining injuries in a construction site accident on Interstate 90. He was born in Fairview, Nov. 17, 1933, a son of the late Herbert and Lola Maxson Zimmerly. He was a veteran of the U.S. Army. He worked as a fuelman for Mayer Brothers Construction Co. for more than 25 years. He had been president of the Western Saddle Club and was a member of the St. Francis Ushers Club and the Sunflower. He is survived by his wife of 40 years, Margaret Kirkpatrick Zimmerly; a daughter, Mrs. Donald (Amber) Merry of Union City; a son, Donald “Chico” Zimmerly and his wife, Mary Kay Zimmerly, of Edinboro; a brother, Dale Zimmerly of Waterford; two sisters, Mrs. James (Donna) Hoenes and Mrs. Raymond (Judy) Sweeney, both of Erie; and four grandchildren, Read and Rachel Merry, both of Union City, and Katlin and Cody James Zimmerly, both of Edinboro. She was the founding Mother of the Erie Chapter of the LaLeche League, a member of the VFW 470 Ladies Auxiliary, a volunteer at the Word of Life Center, and she enjoyed nature, walking, photography, reading and boating. She was a member of Blessed Sacrament Catholic Church. She was preceded in death by a sister, Mary Margaret Hober. She was born Feb. 26, 1929, in Starr, son of the late Chris and Mabel Thompson Zuendel. He was raised in the Tionesta area, where he graduated from Tionesta High School. He served overseas with the U.S. Army during the Korean War. Following his discharge, he joined Iron Workers Local 348 in Erie where he worked until his retirement. He was a former Sparta Township supervisor. He was a member of the Masonic Lodge in Youngsville. He enjoyed hunting. He was preceded in death by a son, Jack Zuendel; a sister, Dorothy Cutshaw; and two brothers, William and Zack Zuendel. Survivors include his wife, Verdeen Blum Zuendel; a daughter, Linda Brown of Pleasantville; two sons, Donald J. Zuendel of Spartansburg and Randy Zuendel and his wife, Denise, of Lakewood, Ohio; a sister, Eleanor Darnofall and her husband, George, of Melbourne, Fla.; two brothers, Raymond “Dutch” Zuendel of Wilmington, Del.; five grandchildren; eight great-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews. He was born March 10, 1910, in Erie, son of the late Alexander and Rose Grubish Zurawski. Mr. Zurawski retired in 1975 after working 25 years at American Meter Co. He previously worked for several years at Griswold’s. He was a U.S. Army veteran of World War II. He was a member of St. Cyprian Catholic Church in Waterford and belonged to American Legion Post 285, Waterford; Moose Lodge 882, Union City; and the Polish Falcons Club, Erie. He enjoyed golf, bowling and gardening and was the Polish Falcons national bowling champion of 1945. He was preceded in death by his wife Dorothy Ann Zamierowski Zurawski, on Feb. 2, 1993. They were married March 1, 1948. He was also preceded in death by two sisters, Gladys Belkot and Stella Yzbiki; and a brother, Albert Zur. Survivors include a daughter, Rosemary Kidd and her husband, Gary, of Millcreek; two sons, Roger Zurawski and his wife, Janet, and Raymond Zurawski, all of Waterford; a sister Martha Mamie Wicker of Erie; and five grandchildren, Heidi and Holly Kidd and Suzanne, Julie and Scott Zurawski. Burial with full military honors was at Calvary Cemetery. |
Death 1/16/1994 | Zwilling, Milford S., 75, 8070 Perry Highway, died early Sunday morning, Jan. 16, 1994, at his residence following an extended illness. He was born on Feb. 13, 1918, in Erie, the son of the late Carl and Susan Eller Zwilling. Mr. Zwilling was a retired machinist and had worked for Erie Bolt Co. for 46 years. He also owned and operated Zwilling Custom Tractor Service for many years. He was a member of Summit United Methodist Church; the Erie Crawford County State Police, company number 72; the Summit Lions Club; and was a former Summit Township supervisor. His hobbies were traveling and bowling. He was preceded in death by a daughter, Janet Lee Zwilling. Survivors include his wife, Mildred G. Smith Zwelling, whom he married on Nov. 16, 1940; one daughter, Mrs. Charles (Joan) Rockwood of Union City; one brother, Charles Zwilling of Erie; three sisters, Mrs. Robert (Margaret) Lasher and Mrs. J. Gilbert (Beatrice) Carlson, both of Erie; and Mrs. Charles (Crystal) Reichert of Waterford; three grandchildren and four great-grandchildren. Burial was at Waterford Cemetery. |
